This year Avanti is celebrating
40 years of hairdressing, we opened in 1981 in a small salon in Duke St.
Then we stayed 12 years in Baldwin St and then Westfield St 27 years. I’ve no idea where the time has gone said salon owner John Beirne. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the Avanti story.

Fact: Since 1981 Avanti team members won through 5 times to take part in the prestigious L’Oreal Colour Trophy, 16 heats around the country with the finalists gathered to compete at the Royal Albert Hall in London. John went on to win the title of L’Oreal Colour Trophy regional trophy in Chester. His model was Susan Littler.
Avanti regularly have pictures in the leading fashion magazines.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT
John has won the N.H.F. photographic awards on no less than 3 occasions, no one else has ever done this.

When Avanti first started it went on to have 3 salons in St Helens, Wigan & Warrington. Only St Helens is open now. The Warrington shop is still under same name with new owners and has been open for 25 years.
Our competition work has taken us all over the country and we even visited Moscow, Milan, Paris & Berlin to show support for the British teams.
As with dancing, Blackpool was the home of hairdressing, Blackpool International Hairdressing Championships, held at the Winter Gardens every year around March.
John won his first competition in Blackpool, ‘The Naturelle Trophy’ way back in 1981, his model was Janet Hewitt, also the title of ‘Superstylist’ and £1000 prize money in 1988 and many others throughout the years.

Guess Who?
We have found a caricature of John drawn in 1999, doesn’t look any different now!
Along with the salon’s big birthday this year salon owner John Beirne also has a big birthday (but won’t admit it), John and his friends are off to Amsterdam to celebrate.
If you’ve ever been to Avanti you may have noticed this ‘head’, it was brought in Moscow many years ago and we have never seen another one, a fantastic collection of scissors.

The judges seemed to think so, this was the winning photograph from entries from around the country giving John the title of NHF Men’s Photographic Stylist of the Year.
The salon celebrates being 40 years old this year – Our History
John started his hairdressing career at the former Michael Robinson salon in Newton, and attended Leigh College on a day release. He went on to manage the Lookin Good salon in St Helens before opening Avanti.
John demonstrated his hair fashion at Leigh College after being invited back and he advised the competiton team at Blackburn College. Avanti joined forces regularly with St Helens College competition team and has demonstrated for L’Oreal and the NHF in Blackpool & Lancashire and held 3 shows in Manchester.
But John’s passion is competition and they have taken him around the country, sometimes in the salon till midnight, dying models hair to use the next day. The rest is our history.

Rehersals are starting again for Celebration Choir which john formed 13 years ago to raise money for Willowbrook Hopsice, if your interested and like singing come alonmg.

AVANTI TV – John has appeared on numerous TV programmes including Eggheads & Weakest Link and a infamous Channel 5 program. But did you know his first TV debut was with Geoff Banks on BBC1 Clothes Show way back comenting on competition work in Blackpool Winter Gardens in the eighties!
SHOWS: John and Avanti team have held 3 of their own shows in Manchester but his first show was at Dentonsd Green Deaf Centre to raise money for a church roof fund in 1986.
